It narrates the tale through Bishwabasu, the chief of the indigenous Sabara tribe, who worshipped Lord Jagannath in the form of a mysterious blue stone idol known as Nila Madhava. This segment highlights how the deity went from being a hidden tribal idol to becoming a widely respected and celebrated figure worshipped by the state. At the core is the human-like dynamic between the divine siblings: Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra, and his younger sister Subhadra Devi. Jain beautifully brings to life their playful family banter, affectionate disagreements, and unwavering loyalty to one another, painting them as a warm, loving family that feels close and relatable, rather than distant or intimidating deities.
The next set of stories helps us decode the rituals and miracles associated with Lord Jagannath. A significant portion of the book unravels the unique rituals and architectural marvels of the Puri temple. Chapters such as “Secrets of the Wooden Logs” discuss the deep meaning behind Nabakalebara, the special ritual in which the wooden statues of the gods are replaced and carved from a chosen Neem tree. The author also explains interesting facts about the temple’s flags, which always fly against the wind, and the healing powers of the old stepwells. The book is filled with moments of pure joy in chapters like “ The Whispering Bells”, where a young girl innocently questions if someone resided inside the temple bells. The simple stories about ordinary worshippers, old kings, and famous saints drawn from the Skanda Puran and the Shree Jagannath temple administration literature are like a breath of fresh air. Jain shares tales of miracles where things like caste, wealth, or social status do not matter to Lord Jagannath. In these stories, a sincere gift from a poor devotee is valued more than the expensive offerings made by rich rulers.
The author then shares stories around the Ultimate Gathering – the famous Rath Yatra (Grand Chariot Festival). Jain’s imagery of how the lord leaves the sanctum of the temple to meet the masses on the streets, breaking all barriers of caste, creed, and nationality, is immersive and, on many occasions, triggers emotional responses.
As a reader, I enjoyed this section the most. The chapters “ The Narrative of the Charioteers” and “ Unity in Diversity ” stayed with me much after I finished reading the book.

Because the book draws heavily from scriptures and the temple administration literature, apart from the oral narratives, it is not a book to be read in a rush. Pick up a few stories, pause, reflect and then come back to the book the next day! If you do this, a truly peaceful reading experience is guaranteed.
